Advice on how to get website business.
Helpful advice about website promotion, search engine submission,
links, tracking visitors and meta tag refinement.
If you've read How to get websites working, you'll know something of how your site should be constructed. However, building it is just the beginning. There is still a lot of work to be done before it generates any business for you.
Your next task is to submit your website to the major search engines. There are over 200 search engines on the Internet. Of these, the dozen or so really popular ones do most of the business.
They are divided into Search Engines and Directories. The directories include:-
- http://www.yahoo.co.uk
- http://www.yell.co.uk (yellow pages) and
- http://www.dmoz.org (open source directory) .
The search engines include:-
- http://www.excite.com
As in other industries, the players are constantly changing. New ones appear, others decline and some merge. So after submitting your site, you need to stay informed about the search engine market and ensure that your site is registered where it matters.
Links To Your Site
Another way of attracting visitors to your website is by getting other businesses to make Links to it. This could be from your trade/professional associations, customers or suppliers.
Meta Tags
In addition to the Title and Description meta tags that were mentioned in How to get websites working, another very important meta tag is the Keywords Tag.
If you've answered the questions on the Internet Marketing page, you will have generated a substantial list of keywords and phrases that describe your offering. These are the words you hope searchers will use to find your site. But how can you be sure that your keywords are working?
Visitor Tracking
If you have a commercial ISP (Internet Service Provider) you may be able to get site statistics from them, but it may be costly. Alternatively, you may consider including some third party visitor tracking software on your site.
This will provide data that enables you to compare your site design with its actual popularity. Armed with such statistics you can modify and refine your website until it is honed to peak performance.
